Meet Our New PT, Katie Van Scyoc

Mar. 8, 2023 11:40 am

We are proud to welcome Katie Van Scyoc, PT, DPT, CMTPT to the PT Center for Women family. Katie is excited to meet her new patients and brings a wide variety of skills to the team. A quick Q & A will help you get to know Katie. We know you'll find her to be as wonderful as we do.

Did you always want to be a physical therapist?

"I have a really strong music background and did all the high school musical things, so much so that everyone pegged me to become a music teacher. I just knew I wanted to do something where I could help people. When I was a junior, my mom ended up having physical therapy for tendinitis on her shoulder. I went to several sessions with her and it was like a light switched on-I got a very strong feeling that this was something I wanted to do and could do well."

Talk about your areas of focus and specialties in physical therapy.

"I've been doing pelvic floor rehab now for more than 15 years, for both women and men. That includes the treatment of chronic pelvic pain, pelvic organ prolapse, urinary and bowel dysfunction, pregnancy/postpartum complications, and sexual dysfunction. I have a strong interest and background in treatments of the spine as well, using osteopathic, myofascial and visceral manipulation."

Did we miss anything?

"Well, I do dry needling and orthotics too."

How about a rundown of your education?

"I have a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Psychology from Carroll University, earned my Master's Degree there, and then achieved my Doctorate in Physical Therapy at Concordia University."

What can a patient expect from you?

"First and foremost, I let you know I'm on your side. I'm your advocate. It's also my job is to listen really well, right off the bat and at every session, so I fully understand what's going on. Perhaps most importantly, I help you learn how to heal yourself and achieve your goals, whatever those may be. Let me be clear: I'm not here to 'fix you.' I'm here to show you how you can help fix yourself, empowering you with the tools to maintain your best quality of life long-term."

Can you tell us about your family life?

"I live in Oshkosh with my husband Ryan, our young son, and two giant Labrador Retrievers. Being outdoors is our favorite thing. We love to travel, especially to places where we can scuba dive or downhill ski. We're really looking forward to getting our son involved in those activities. We appreciate having most of our extended family in the Fox Valley."

Anything else you'd like to share?

"I love that in being a physical therapist, every day is different. Every individual who walks through the door, woman or man, has their own unique story. I love being part of that journey, helping a patient solve their issues and improve their quality of life. It's like a puzzle. And you have to find all the different pieces that kind of contribute to what is going wrong, and then figure out how to restore them. It's important that every one of my patients feels heard, feels validated, and understands that they are doing the right thing by coming in and getting treated. Sometimes we are dealing with very personal issues, and people can feel shame or embarrassment with these struggles. I want to lift that burden from them."
